Michael Andrew
Spalding
Oct 2, 1950 — Nov 21, 2024
Louisville
On the night of November 21, 2024 Michael Andrew Spalding transitioned to be in the space that was prepared for him by his Lord and Savior just as He said He would. Michael was born on October 2, 1950 in Lebanon, KY to Hattie and Richard Spalding. He was the youngest boy of his siblings, Joseph, Geneva, Mary Jean, James, Darlene, and Charlene. He was baptized as a young adult at Bethel Star Apostolic Church of Lebanon. As a young person, Michael was educated at Rosenwald School and Lebanon High. In his pastime he enjoyed playing softball and fishing.
At the age of 20, Michael enlisted into the United States Army on May 6, 1970. After his installation at Fort Riley in Kansas he went on to serve in Vietnam as a Wireman. Michael was honorably discharged on May 1, 1976 holding the rank of E4 with the 217th Supply Company as a Lineman.
After his time as an active serviceman, Michael returned to Lebanon where he spent the majority of his life. He married Barbara Mattingly with whom he had two children, Michael and Felicia or as most knew them, Peanut and FeFe. He was employed at General Electric in Louisville where his father and brothers worked as well. In his leisure time he enjoyed watching college basketball but specifically the University of Louisville Cardinals, professional golf sports with a great liking for Tiger Woods, working with his father on a small farm, and sitting on the porch talking with his son.
Later in life Michael moved to Louisville where his kind spirit and easy going demeanor garnered him many friendships with those he encountered. Those who lived in his apartment building, young and old, easily and quickly were attracted to him. It was very regular that other tenants would stop by his apartment to exchange a brief moment of conversation just to check on him, to see if he needed anything from the store, bring him home cooked meals, or to simply spend time with him doing one of his favorite pastime activities that was watching and talking sports. When he transitioned to a long term care facility, the same affinity happened and the same comments about his kind spirit and easy going demeanor were echoed by the residents and staff.
He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, James, Joseph, Mary Jean, and Geneva and a granddaughter, Brooklyn. Michael leaves to cherish his memories his children Michael and Felicia, grandchildren Dexter, TJ, Alicia, and Talon, sisters, Charlene and Darlene, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
