Obituary

George Thomas "Tom" Harmon, 82, passed away Thursday, July 16, 2026, at his residence in Albany, Kentucky. He was born on August 2, 1943, in Lebanon, Kentucky.

Harmon was a retired Controller at Western Kentucky University where he worked for 30 years. A 1961 graduate of Lebanon High School, he earned his bachelor's degree in business administration in 1966 at WKU, and a master's in business administration in 1974 while working at WKU.

A Vietnam War veteran, Harmon served in the U.S. Army from 1966 through 1968. He was a longtime member of Lebanon Methodist Church, and a Mason.

On September 11, 1966, Harmon married Beverly Jean Pearl at Lebanon Baptist Church. Beverly also earned her bachelor's and master's degrees at WKU and taught at Warren Elementary School in Bowling Green. When they retired, they decided to move back home to Marion County and enjoyed life there for 25 years.

They were always early risers and loved arriving at the Lebanon Aquatic Center at 6 a.m. almost every day to swim and walk laps in the indoor pool to help stay physically fit. They also took daily walks. In their younger years, they loved boating, fishing and camping at Barren River Lake and Green River Lake. Tom enjoyed collecting guns, restoring an old gun that was his grandfather's, and going to a shooting range for target practice.

They loved sports and had basketball and football season tickets for many years at WKU. After retiring and returning to Marion County, they purchased season tickets to University of Kentucky football games.

The Harmons loved attending Christian churches and celebrating the Christmas season. Their decorated Christmas tree stayed up in their living room 365 days a year.

Life was great until Beverly – always a straight-A student – began having memory problems. Several years ago, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's dementia and now is in a late stage of the disease. Tom – her best friend and husband for 60 years – was her excellent caregiver at their home. But she fell in their home in December 2025 and broke a hip. She had to undergo surgery, go to a rehabilitation center, and Tom knew he could no longer take care of her at home. It broke his heart.

Beverly now lives in a nursing home in Burkesville, close to their son Kelly Harmon and his family in Albany. Tom sold their home and moved to Albany so he could live close to Beverly and Kelly's family. They visited Beverly often. Beverly's extra guardian angel, Tom, did everything he possibly could for the love of his life until he died of a broken heart on July 16.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilhelmina "Willie" Harmon and George Thomas Harmon, Sr.; and a sister-in-law, Pam Harmon.

Survivors include: his wife, Beverly Harmon of Burkesville; a son, Kelly Thomas Harmon (Marla), of Albany; a brother, Bill Harmon, of Danville; a brother-in-law, Charles Pearl (Karen) of Frankfort; two grandsons, Cameron and Chase Harmon, of Albany; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

A family graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 21, 2026 at Lebanon National Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the Marion County Veterans Honor Guard. Rev. Troy Allen Elmore, pastor of Lebanon Methodist Church, will officiate.
